CHAPTER 9
Unlike the days when my tinnitus began, considerable help is available today.
The British Tinnitus Association [BTA] offers much useful information
including a comprehensive list of Tinnitus Self Help Groups throughout the UK
and in many other countries.
Their web address is www.tinnitus.org.uk.
Even better, if there is not already a group in your area they will advise
you how and even assist you to set up your own group. Their confidential help
line telephone number is 0800 018 0527.
If you decide to attend such a group I feel that it is important that you
do so in the right frame of mind. They provide a wonderful means of making and
enjoying social contact. Go there to enjoy the company of other people and not
to complain about how bad your tinnitus is and how much you suffer. The
opposite approach will be much more beneficial to you. Help other people who
complain. Some people revel in talking about their aches and pains and how bad
their lives are. Spend your time being cheerful and try to cheer them up. Show
by example that tinnitus does not have to rule their lives. A positive
attitude will not only help them it will do a power of good for you.
In the BTA report about National Tinnitus Week 9-15 February 2009, there is
a comment by Jack Straw, Secretary of State for Justice. He states that he has
had tinnitus for 27 years but because there is so much going on in his life,
for most of the time he has learned to ignore it. Obviously his conscious mind
concerns itself with more important things.
Many other past and present high profile people continued to lead active
lives in spite of tinnitus. I have listed just a few of them:
Neil Young, Barbara Streisand. Pete Townsend, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy,
David Letterman, Tony Randall, Steve Martin, Cher, Engelbert Humperdinck,
Ronald Reagan, Thomas Edison, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Burt Reynolds, Eric
Clapton, Sylvester Stallone, Rick Emmett, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Phil Collins,
Ozzy Osborne, Martin Luther, Peter Stringfellow. Bill Clinton. [Source:

Another organization that is pro active in the field of tinnitus is the
Royal National Institute for the Deaf [RNID]. Their web address is:

Having taken you this far I have one final thing to say.
Make that positive commitment right now and you will instantly be on the
road to a wonderful new life.
I wish you God speed.
