There are countless books and web sites on the subject of tinnitus. I have read many of them. I have yet to find even one that does anything more for the tinnitus sufferer than add to their stress and depression. It also appears that few if any of the authors have tinnitus themselves.

Even among the most eminent medical professionals there are many conflicting opinions as to the cause of those dreadful noises in the ear. They all know about the different types of noise; buzzing, whistling, humming and hissing etc. but they cannot agree on the cause. Even more depressing they all admit that they are years away from discovering a cure.

Knowing about the cause of tinnitus may be of interest to some people but the only thing of interest to those who suffer with it is how to get rid of the noise.

People spend hours in doctor’s waiting rooms and weeks waiting to see a consultant only to be told that there is little that they can do to help. What little help is available consists of counselling and or various types of masking device, which can do little more than give you a different sound to listen to for part of the day. Maybe they do help some people although they are not cheap and presumably it is necessary to change them from time to time as you become equally depressed by the substitute noise. It seems a case of suffer this noise in your ear while you get a break from that other noise. Great. That gives someone tormented by an unbearable noise in his or her ear a lot to look forward to.

That’s it. That is as good as it gets. In other words you are on your own.

Since the day you were born you have been blinking several thousand times a day. Until I mentioned it you were never even aware of it. If make yourself aware of it by concentrating on it for a few minutes you will discover that it would soon become very distressing. The reason that you are normally unaware of blinking is because your sub conscious mind has blanked it out for you. You still blink and it is still just as annoying but you are totally unaware of it. Look at other people. Watch them as they blink. Isn’t it amazing that they are completely unaware of it? They don’t even notice that as their eyes close the light is blanked out.

This proves to us that our brain has the ability to help us. If it can blank out blinking, can it also blank out noises in the ear? The answer is a categorical yes. I, and many other people that I have been able to help, are living wonderful normal lives because of it. How can it not be possible? Your brain is demonstrating its amazing ability right now.

The only thing stopping your brain blanking out the noise now is you. Understandably, the noise is constantly on your conscious mind. You cannot stop thinking about it. If you never stopped thinking about blinking and it remained on your conscious mind you would become equally upset by it.

Blinking is easy to ignore because you are used to it. You are also confident that after a couple of minutes you will forget all about it. It will not suddenly change or become less irritating, the only thing that will change is that you will become unaware of it.

What we have got to do now is find a way for you to do the same with your tinnitus.

The first thing you must understand is that tinnitus cannot do you any harm unless you allow it to. It is just a harmless noise which has been getting on your nerves and causing you considerable distress.

As of this very second I would like you to change the way you think about it. It is not your enemy. It is not even very important. Instead of hating it and trying to fight it or taking pills so that you are less stressed out, try to get to like it. No? OK then just pretend you like it. Now concentrate on getting back to doing all of the things that you like or used to like. Socialise with friends and laugh with them and enjoy their company. Allow the noise to come with you. Just don’t take very much notice of it. The more you do to occupy your conscious mind the easier it will be for your sub conscious mind to blank out the noise. If you do this, at first you will notice short periods for time when you were free of the noise. As your confidence grows those periods will last much longer.

Stop worrying, because you have absolutely nothing to worry about. That noise will soon become less intrusive and it will not be long before it will be like blinking; only there when you recall it to your conscious mind.
