HOW I AND MANY OTHERS HAVE LEARNED TO LIVE HAPPILY WITH TINNITUS
Tinnitus takes many forms. Noises in the ear and in some cases both ears
range from Buzzing, Hissing, Whistling and clicking. They also vary in their
degree of severity. Some are only apparent occasionally but in the most severe
cases the noise is constant.
Strange as it may seem those noises, which are constant – (there all of the
time), are the easiest to conquer.
Be assured that to conquer tinnitus does not require any skill. There are
no laborious exercises or special diets. This is very much the case that the
less you do the quicker the result. In fact any conscious effort by you would
be totally counter productive.
I will illustrate the point and prove to you here and now that you already
have everything you need to succeed.
If I am going to help you, and help you I can, it is very important for
your own sake to take a couple of minutes and do as I ask.
For the next couple of minutes I would like you to really concentrate on
blinking – yes blinking. Really become aware of every time you blink. Please
do this before you read any further, or at least come back to it if you insist
on doing things your own way.
If you did as I asked you would realise that if you were constantly aware
of blinking it would soon become incredibly annoying.
Until I mentioned it you were never aware of blinking. You blink thousands
of times a day without ever being aware of it.
Now, without them realising it, watch someone else as they blink. Those
little shutters repeatedly go down and up and for a fraction of a second they
block out the light and yet the person you are watching is totally unaware of
it.
Breathing is another example. If you were to really concentrate on in and
out after a few minutes you would find that it was becoming very tiring.
If we were consciously aware of our blinking and breathing it would not be
long before new associations were formed e.g. The RNIB [Royal National
Institute for Blinking]. Blinking could be just as annoying as tinnitus if we
were constantly aware of it. The reason it is not is because our brain / sub
conscious mind is aware that we do not need to be aware of such things and,
quite simply, that blank it out of our conscious mind.
You could argue that as we have been blinking and breathing since the day
we were born it is natural [and tinnitus isn’t] but that is quite irrelevant.
Our brain / sub conscious has still had to make it possible for us to be
unaware of it which proves quite categorically that such a thing is
possible.
It is now important for you to realise and accept that a noise in the ear
is not dangerous or life threatening. It is no more or less than a harmless
noise albeit an annoying one. That buzzing, whistling, hissing, clicking or
whatever noise you are suffering from is only going to spoil you life if you
allow it to.
Knowing that your body is more than capable of dealing with such things –
and have already proved to you that it is, all that you have to do now is
allow your body to get on with it. How?
You will doubtless already be aware that there is no medical cure for
tinnitus. As of now forget wondering if a doctor or consultant or any medicine
or pill can take away the noise because they cannot. Just for the time being
accept that the noise is not going to stop [although this is possible that
would be a bonus]. For the foreseeable future just accept the noise. Never
even talk about it or complain about it. If necessary force yourself to do all
of the things you enjoy or used to enjoy. To the outside world act as if you
no longer have tinnitus. Let friends and loved ones think that you are cured
not by saying that you are but by acting as though you are. At this stage you
will not feel any immediate benefit but you will have given your loved ones
untold joy if they think that you are no longer suffering. You must know how
awful it is to love someone and know that there is nothing you can do to
relieve their suffering. Right now by laughing with them and enjoying their
company you will remove the hurt that they are suffering and you can
justifiably feel proud that you are learning to walk tall.
By no longer feeling the need for sympathy or feeling sorry for yourself
you are on the path, which will lead towards your success. Once you allow
yourself to accept the noise and live quite happily or in spite of it the
sooner your sub conscious mind will begin to blank it out for. Always remember
that the noise cannot harm you. Your sub conscious mind cannot help you until
you learn not to let the noise bother you. Soon you will experience periods
when you were unaware of the noise. As your confidence grows those moments
will become more frequent and last much longer. When you go to bed, which is
one of the most difficult times, allow yourself to relax. Although the noise
is there just ignore it. By not letting it worry of upset you, you will soon
fall asleep. If you just persevere it will get progressively easier.
HOW DO I KNOW THIS?
I am not a doctor or consultant and I have not had any medical training. My
qualifications are even better. I have had the most severe and continuous
tinnitus for over 25 years. For the past 23 years although it never leaves me
I have seldom been aware of it. If I talk about or as now write about it is
there in its full volume because I have brought it to my conscious level. If
I did not know for certain that within a few minutes of completing this that
the noise will be gone no power on earth could make me do this.
Many years ago a friend questioned how I could bear to live with a very
loud ticking clock in my study. This brought to my attention just how loud it
was and made me wonder how I could spend so many hours in that room without
ever being aware of it. That simple event eventually led me to my cure. It has
also enabled me over many years to turn a very large number of tinnitus
sufferers into ex sufferers. I do hope that I have made it possible for you to
join us.
